Honey And Medical Science

Introduction:
Honey is a sweet liquid that is produced by honey bees using nectar from flowers. It has a large number of varieties and is basically produced by a process of regurgitation and evaporation and is stored as a primary food source in the beehive.

It has been used both as a food as well as a medicine since ancient times. Honey has been used in clinical research and has revealed many health benefits. Here we will describe briefly the benefits of honey as a medicine and cure for a large number of diseases.

Health Benefits: 

1. Honey has been reported to have inhibitory effect on about 60 species of bacteria as well as large number of viruses and fungi.

2. Honey stimulates production of special cells that can repair tissue damage caused by infection. It also has anti-inflammatory action that can quickly reduce pain and inflammation.

3. Due to its antiseptic and anti bacterial properties honey has been used in the management of chronic wounds.

4. According to a recent research it shows that honey being a viscous substance is helpful in reducing symptoms of gastroesophagael reflux disease.

5. Honey is sometimes used for the prevention and treatment of seasonal allergies.

6. A special honey- Manuka honey produced in Australia and New Zealand has been shown to be effective in reducing plaque formation and can be compared to the chemical chlorohexidine gluconate.

7. According to a study published in 'Medical Science Monitor' in 2004 it showed that topical honey was far superior to drug acylovir in treating both labial and genital herpes lesions.

8. It has been used for cough suppression.

9. Honey contains anti-oxidants that can help reduce risk of certain cancers.

10.Some varieties of honey contain some friendly bacterial and so it can be used as a probiotic.


11. Honey can be moisturizing and nourishing for a healthy and a beautiful young looking skin.

12. Honey contains a wide array of vitamins and minerals  including niacin, riboflavin, calcium, iron, magnesium as well as a good source of energy because of the fructose and the glucose it contains.

13. Among the many health benefits of honey it also help boost up the body's immune system, helps improve the function of the digestive system and keeps the body healthy and protected from diseases.

14. Honey helps cure sore- throat because of its soothing properties as well as anti microbial activity.

15. Honey when used with a glass of hot milk can calm the soul and give a peaceful sleep ant night.

Honey Discussed in Religious Scriptures:

  • Honey has a religious significance in almost all the major religions. The vedas and other religious scriptures of Hinduism describes honey as a great healthy food. 
  • In the Holy Bible New testament Mathew chapter 3 verse 4 describes John the baptist to have lived for a long period of time in wilderness only on locusts and wild honey.
  • The Holy Quran has a chapter named Surah Nahl means the bee. It is mentioned is Surah Nahl chapter 16 verses 68-69:

And thy Lord taught the Bee to build its cells in hills, on trees, and in (men's) habitations; Then to eat of all the produce (of the earth), and find with skill the spacious paths of its Lord: there issues from within their bodies a drink of varying colors, wherein is healing for men: verily in this is a Sign for those who give thought"
